It’s been almost 23 years since Duke’s Christian Laettner sank one of the famous shots in NCAA Tournament history, advancing the Blue Devils to the 1992 Final Four with a game-winner in overtime over Kentucky.

Both before and especially after “the shot,” Laettner became one of the most disliked players of his era, the most visible athlete representative of Duke’s basketball program.

For many fans, the enmity towards Laettner lasted well beyond when he left Durham and followed him through his NBA career. That phenomenon will be the subject of a new ESPN 30 for 30 documentary, I Hate Christian Laettner, which will debut March 15 after the 2015 NCAA Tournament brackets are revealed.

ESPN Films announced the project Tuesday, promising “extensive access to Laettner, previously unseen footage and perspectives from all sides” and a “’gloves-off’ examination of the man who has been seen by many as the ‘Blue Devil Himself.’”

It will be directed by Rory Karpf, who also helmed a prior 30 for 30 on former NASCAR driver Tim Richmond and an SEC Stories film on the Manning family.
